In military addresses, a code or string is often used to show in which branch of the armed forces the addressee is service. In France, for example, a sorting code such as NAVAL, AIR or ARMÉES is used. In United States' military addresses, the place name is replaced with APO to show that the addressee is in the army or FPO for naval addressees.
